Portable units, though more widespread, still account for a significant proportion of air conditioning use, with bills rising from £83 per week to over £150.

The issue extends beyond individual households, however. A recent report by the Climate Change Committee paints a stark picture: by 2050, heatwaves will become commonplace, and without adequate cooling measures in place, an additional 10,000 heat-related deaths are projected annually. Care homes, hospitals, and even schools will need to be equipped with air conditioning within the next two decades – an expensive and logistically challenging task.

The environmental impact of this trend is equally concerning. Air conditioning accounts for approximately 4% of global greenhouse gas emissions, making it one of the most energy-intensive cooling methods available. More efficient technologies like heat pumps can be up to three times as effective at cooling large spaces while using significantly less power.

Despite these alternatives, the government’s response has been sluggish. Climate advisers have urged a nationwide shift towards air conditioning installation, but their recommendations are still pending. Experts like Sam Alvis of the IPPR thinktank advocate for a more holistic approach: integrating solar panels and air conditioning to create a more sustainable energy ecosystem.

As Britain struggles to adapt to its new hot-weather reality, policymakers must take heed of these warnings. The cooling conundrum is not merely an individual problem; it has far-reaching implications for public health, energy efficiency, and the environment. It’s imperative that we rethink our approach to air conditioning, investing in more sustainable technologies and implementing measures to mitigate its environmental impact.
