Alberta’s mosquito population has exploded, bringing swarms of biting insects to the province and triggering a rise in emergency room visits, particularly among children. This phenomenon is not new to Alberta, but the sheer number of cases being reported this summer has some parents taking their children to hospital.
Skeeter syndrome, characterized by severe inflammatory reactions to mosquito bites, affects mostly young people, according to Dr. Mariam Hanna, a pediatric allergist and clinical immunologist at McMaster University. However, what’s driving the increase in cases is more complex than just demographics. Treatment options for skeeter syndrome include icing the affected area, applying over-the-counter steroid cream, and using oral antihistamines. According to Alberta Health Services, allergic reactions from insect stings, bites, and environmental exposures accounted for 1,511 visits at 13 hospitals during June, July, and August of last year. This is just the tip of the iceberg – a harbinger of more severe health consequences to come if we don’t take action.
The rise in skeeter syndrome cases serves as a warning sign that we ignore at our own peril.
